Wiper rings
Wiper rings maintain sealing contact with the piston rod when the device is stationary (static, no reciprocating rod movement) and in operation (dynamic, reciprocating rod), while the tolerance for rod diameter d is determined by the rod seal. Without wiper rings, the retracting piston rod could carry debris into the cylinder.
